The Lyons-Muir Church has a wonderfully rich history that makes
our new church a very special place to worship.
It all began with two churches, one in Lyons, one in Muir. In 1858, a parsonage
was purchased in Lyons, as well asa building that became known as the "Old
Brown Church." However, in the spring the flood waters rose to heights
that made services impossible and endangered the building itself. In 1881,
the Lyons Church building and the Parsonage were built. The Muir Presbyterian
Church was organized in 1860, and the church building was erected
between 1868-1870. In 1924 the Ladies Aid Society obtained permission to
build an annex on the church.
In 1972, the Lyons United Methodist Church and the Muir Presbyterian
Church
began using the same pastor. Starting in 1973, the two churches began having
joint services, alternating between buildings each month. In 1989, the
two churches became federated and the resulting congregation was
named the Lyons-Muir Church.
In the mid-1990's the decision was made to build a new church.
The Lyons building was purchased by the Lyons
Public Library and the Muir building was sold to an individual and turned into
a home.
The new Lyons-Muir Church was built at the corner of Olmstead Road and Bluewater
Highway (M-21). Many volun-
teers from our church families, other church families, and many other individual
volunteers worked to help erect
the building. Volunteers worked six days a week, and the ladies of the church
served the workers lunch each day.
On Easter morning 2001, the first worship service was held in our wonderful
new building. A NEW ERA HAS BEGUN!
